Finally! Presenting the ironic Magento 2.0 in this fast paced technical world
Magento 2.0 was announced in 2010 at the Magento Developers Paradise by the then CTO Yoav Kutner. Now after 5 years, though we have got it but we are yet not sure that is it really stable like its previous version. It is ironic that they took so long to come up with it in this so called fast paced technical world.
Looking at the needs of the technologically advanced customers, Magento developers have upgraded the coding techniques to deliver high performance web development. In order to get flexibility at it best and improve performance they opted in for building it from the scratch instead of making amendments in 1.0 codebase.
Need for Magento 2.0
Magento 2 was announced so as to improve the quality of product by automated UI tests, unit test and etc and by improving the products performance and scalability by data scaling , load tests, media scaling. Further, the aim was to enhance the security issues , incorporating multiple language support and Web Services API.
Why so late ?
Since then announcement of Magento 2 there are a lot things going on with the firm. eBay took over the firm with a 49% stake and later on it emerged in overtaking the complete firm. However, the co-founder Yoav Kutner and Roy Rubin continued to work with the firm but Yoav left the firm within a year. His post on Quora might get us some deductions on what took Magento 2.0 so long to enter into the market.
Magento 2 Fit or Fad
A blogger said — ‘Magento 2 nothing more than a rewrite with jQuery’. Let’s find out.
Now that Magento 2.0 is all set, we should now discuss the whether it is worth the time it took to come in the market.
Will it provide all the feature which were promised?
Can it prove to be the most powerful eCommerce platform for next gen applications?
States Danny Decker, partner of Harlo Interactive: “I have tested Magento 2.0 dev60 and it is nothing more than a rewrite with jQuery. Magento 2 offers the same feature set as Magento 1. You’ll just need to pay a developer to migrate all your 1.x extensions to 2.x, since there is no upgrade path.” According to him Magento 2 does great things for developers, but “it does nothing to advance the merchants’ needs. Magento is missing the most important suite of marketing and sales automation tools.”
Though the extension issue is no longer a concern but the problem is that there are a lot of companies which are now standing atoll in the eCommerce world and can give a tough competition to it. This is because when Magento was engrossed working for the completely new version of it while the other companies managed to enrich their existing platforms and now they offer features similar to Magento 1. On the top of it some have evolved so much so that they offer more comprehensive eCommerce development for web as well as mobile.
No need to worry, as Magento is a well established platform with big brands such as Harper’s Bazaar, Nike, OfficeMax and Christian Louboutin in its kitty. Moreover, the huge customer base and community of developers won’t let it freeze anyway.
Magento 2 is here with a vengeance
What Magento 2 has to offer? :
- Making customization more easy
- Making external integrations an easy process
- Improved performance and scalability
- Improvement in the installation process
- It’s easier to upgrade with Magento 2.0
- Technology stack update
- Promising improved quality, testing and documentation
Being responsive is indeed an achievement with Google being so much specific about the responsive design theme and not to forget Mobilegeddon, its algorithm update. Magento 2.0 is responsive starting from its default themes. Further the issue of moving extensions form version Magento 1.x to 2 is solved. Other changes are related to intricate programming world, so to get to learn more about it you can got to Magento 2 Developer Document and Github .
Should I wait for Magento 2?
I know this huge delay in its launch might be making you rethink to stay with Magento and wait for Magento 2.0. Looking at the performance of Magento 1 which is still the most extensible and flexible eCommerce platform in the development world today, I would recommend you to stick to it. According to statistics, Magento holds a share of 68% of more sites than WooCommerce in the Alexa Top 100 thousand sites.
Moreover, Magento 1.x is the right platform which suffices your current eCommerce needs and sticking to it will certainly provide easy migration to Magento 2.0.
I do not want to reinforce that that Magento is the best, well no platform can be. But according to my experience it has a lot of potential to serve clients of different enterprise levels and genres.
